Crisis care

We know that excellent crisis care exists. But we need it available everywhere, for everyone.

Not being able to access the care you need in a crisis is not acceptable: an emergency is an emergency.

Putting people at the heart of crisis care

In a year-long independent inquiry, we listened to hundreds of people to find out how well crisis services are meeting people’s needs.

People told us crisis care had been at its best when they:

  • had someone to talk to who’s kind and caring
  • were able to choose the right treatment for their particular circumstances
  • had a good range of quality options
  • were somewhere that was safe.

Yet, too often people are turned away and struggle to get help. People said they had been left feeling:

  • neglected
  • rejected
  • repeatedly ignored
  • scared and alone.

At its worst, people told the inquiry about being:

  • traumatised
  • coerced
  • dangerously restrained
  • abused.

With staff on the front line under tremendous pressure to deliver more for less, crisis care in some places has been dehumanised.
